It decided to design its own earbuds that had built-in ANC using the same transducers, amplifiers and other components as its flagship products.

The result is an earbud that offers top-notch performance but also feels sturdy and luxurious. Focal reduced the size and weight of its premium headphones to make these compact headphones more comfortable for travel, but still uses magnesium for the yokes, which keeps them light. The design is stylish and sleek with the circular "skeletonised" design that is similar to the company's full-sized, high-end Focal Celestee and good over ear noise cancelling headphones LED backlit Focal "flame" logos on the sides of each earphone that actually glow (you can toggle this feature within the accompanying app).

When connected to your device, they operate on the latest Bluetooth v5.1 technology, which includes support for SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX Adaptive, and a built-in DAC that supports up to 24 bit/192kHz playback. The ear cups fold flat for easy storage and the cord is detachable for use on other devices that do not have Bluetooth like many cell phones.

The headphones can also be used in DAC-mode which disables internal processing to provide better sound quality than Bluetooth headphones with built-in DACs. Focal declined to reveal the specific DAC they used, but when tested with a high-quality portable DAC/headphone amp, the Bathys delivered great results--including better-than-CD-quality resolution, tight bass, and an open, airy midrange.

The Focal Bathys are specifically designed to be used on planes and in other noisy environments However, the DAC mode makes them ideal for more attentive listening. The Bathys are a great alternative to the closed-back headphones that are tuned to bass. They'd make a great gift for anyone who is an audiophile on your list.

JBL Tune 760NC

The JBL Tune-760NC is lightweight and comfortable pair of headphones that feature active noise cancellation. They have a bass profile that gives your sound depth, and an extended battery life. They also have a sturdy construction that is ideal for commutes and travel however they can be uncomfortable for long listening sessions due to their tight fit.

The headphones come with a decent set of controls on the ear cups that let you manage your music and call settings. The headphones have buttons that adjust the volume up and down and power, ANC, and the like. The buttons are surrounded by a tiny section that is lit by an LED, and you can tap it to change the headphone's light display. The headphones are well-padded and are comfortable to wear however, they can be uncomfortable for those who wear glasses.

It then reverses those sounds and blocks them out, resulting in an experience that is more peaceful. This allows you to listen at lower volumes and reduces the risk of the aches and fatigue of your ears. These headphones are compatible with a wide range of Bluetooth devices, including your computer and a majority of mobile phones. They're also compatible with many PS4 and Xbox One controllers to receive audio however you can't use them to communicate with your co-workers. These headphones are very comfortable and have a cushioned headband. They are designed to be used to travel or commute and are able to fold up to be easily stored in backpacks or bags. They are made of plastic and have a pliable quality, but are fairly durable and have a strong click when you move or bend them. Noise cancelling may be an issue for some people, however they block a lot of the low rumble from busses and chatter of passengers.

The sound quality of these headphones is good, especially considering their price. They're also more lightweight and portable than most gaming headsets, with a weight of just 265g when collapsed.

Onboard controls can be found on the right earcup with power and track control buttons beside a recessed multi-function button that doubles as an active noise-cancellation button. The controls were simple to use. They worked as they were advertised during my tests.

The Opus bass is a roaring and well-rounded, with depth and clarity you won't find in a lot of budget headphones. It's not quite as full as the Bose Extra Bass headphones, but it's still better than expectations for the $200 price point. Vocals and lead instruments can be heard with great clarity. The mids are solid. I did notice a small low-end slackness, but switching the EQ to Vocal resolved the issue.

In addition, you'll find an 3.5mm analog cable and USB-C-to-A adapter inside the case, as well as an audio jack for airplanes that is standard for those that haven't yet made the switch to all-cable audio. It's a tiny, but a welcome addition to make it easier to use headphones while traveling.

As with other THX-certified products such as the Opus did a great job in my tests. I was able to walk through the city without having to increase the volume to overcome ambient sound, and I never felt as if I needed to turn my music up to hear it. This is the kind of quality that can help you avoid hearing loss as a result of excessive exposure to high-frequency frequencies.
